November 2011: Stem cell tourism – how far would you go?
If faced with an incurable disease or disability, would you travel overseas for an experimental treatment? Many Australians already go abroad for dental work, cosmetic surgery and IVF services which can be more expensive or unavailable here.
Now, stem cell therapy is increasingly on offer in many countries, including China, Germany and India. Is Australia lagging behind international medical advances—or is this technology too new and unproven to be trusted? What motivates someone to travel abroad to try therapies that haven’t yet been fully tested in the lab? What lessons might be learned from people who travel abroad for reproductive therapies?
This talk will explore the reality and potential for stem cell science, and look at how long Australians may have to wait.
Join ABC Radio National’s Norman Swan and a panel of experts—Stephen Couche, Simon Koblar, Megan Munsie, and Robert Norman—as we weigh up the pros and cons of travelling abroad for experimental treatments.

December 2011: Stem cell science – hope, hype and reality.
Public Forum in Association with the ALP National Conference
Many Australian’s already travel abroad for proven medical treatments such as cosmetic surgery and fertility treatments usually for reasons of cost or availability. However if faced with an incurable disease or disability, would you travel overseas for an experimental treatment?
Type stem cells and any condition into your favourite search engine and in a matter of seconds you will be presented with a long list of tantalising options for cures and treatments. The majority of these treatments have not been medically proven to be either safe or effective and yet increasing numbers of Australians are choosing to participate in these experimental stem cell therapies with unknown consequences.
This panel will explore the reality and potential for stem cell science, the state of Australian stem cell research, and what Governments and policy makers can do to ensure this valuable field of research maintains the momentum.
